The Business Department is proud to announce our Specialist High Skills Major Program is under way! Interested grade ten students may begin the process by seeing Mr. Fisher, Mr. Tarantino or Ms. Stecca in PCC. They will receive presentations throughout the year. Register at Interviews will occur in the spring of 2014 for September entry.

A brief overview of the two-year program:

  • Students take two business courses in each of grade 11 and 12
  • Student must complete CLA's (Contextualized Learning Applications) in their grade 11 and 12 Math and grade 12 English courses
  • Mandatory certifications will be delivered in First Aid, CPR, and WHMI,and Consumer Behaviour
  • Additional certifications will be provided in topics such as Leadership and Personality Dimensions
  • A two credit co-operative education experience completed during the year or the summer
  • Participate in reach ahead activities such as DECA (see below)
  • Earn an enhanced diploma when graduating!

Pitch It Case Competition - pitch a green business idea and win prizes including cash. Python's Pit. Like Dragon's Den? This is our shot. Have a look.

Deca. Compete against other schools in various challenging contests.

OBEA Contests. Many contests run both in class and in a club environment. Must have a teacher OBEA member. No problem, we're covered.

CMA Make it Happen. This is a big group challenge which may lead to $5000 for the school.

CMA High School Case Competition. You accounting students can take this one on.

McMaster High School Business Heroes Competition. Involves marketing plans.

Youth Entrepreneur Programs in Halton. You have to be in Halton to compete. Includes a business plan competition and summer ventures.

Getting Smarter About Money is by InvestorEd and has three separate contests.

Make your Pitch an entrepreneurship venture by Ministry of Economic Development Trade and Employment which features a video submission.

Shebiz is for grade 11 girls only and focuses on women and business.

Camp Enterprise - unique opportunity for selected students with many others from all Halton schools.


CLAs (Contextualized Learning Activities)

This activities relate your business knowledge to your grade 11 and 12 Math classes and grade 12 English classes. They are required. Please download and submit to your SHSM contact if your Math or English teacher doesn't make them available right away.
